Renovation is a growing trend in Singapore and who wouldn't want to make their home more comfortable and cosy after they finally purchase their home, as it's a lifetime shelter for a loving family or first time home buyer's. But as most people would probably get a bit nervous after knowing the actual price of their renovation, we are here to make it alot easier on our clients, with our caring professionals on the job for you.
As an interior design firm, we work with designers and contractors, who can calculate the entire expense you would spend on a home renovation within our clients' budget. Here are some points of view from us talking about why renovation is so expensive in Singapore. (Actual spending I mean,) as there are some very cheap quotes out there, but we will cover that subject later.
1. Cost of DESIGNING
Cheap and pretty doesn't exist, if you understand how much effort has been spent on research, creativity and hard effort before a high quality job has been created. We have to be straightforward and say, interior design is not a charity, though some shoddy designer might charge you an expensive fee then hand you a so so design, but that's an individual case. Just think about how much time and effort has been spent or even on school fees to make you a professional today, and would you mind getting a low wage? No. Exactly, so do designers. A timeline of a 3D drawing of your living room start from a designer's brainstorming, researching, drafter drafting, reviewing with nice clients like you, amending to achieve your expectation.
2. Government levy and regulation
Have you ever noticed the cleaners of your building? Or the builders working under the sun in construction site you drove through? Are they Singaporean? No, I don't think so. No actual Singaporeans want to do the so-called dirty job. Thus, foreign labourers or skilled workers are in high demand. And most of the interior design firms or contractors need to pay for the high government levees for these foreigners due to regulations. We are now at the stage where one low-skilled foreign worker actually costs more than a Singaporean waiter or a counter staff doing a job at a restaurant. For your information, some countries like Australia and New Zealand apply minimum hourly rates for workers up to 50 bucks per hour. Think about if this regulation applies in Singapore.
Renovation is not like the DIY furniture from IKEA, it involves individuals with professional skill to complete the work. Usually an interior design firm will have their own long-term collaborate contractors or subcontracts to another contractor. And your project will require many different kinds of skilled workers from hackers, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, glassmakers and cleaners etc. We need time to do the contracts and submissions for those people. When Singaporeans are one of the pickiest clients on earth, and an experienced person who knows exactly what they are doing will put their price forward accordingly, because more time is needed to get quality things done.
Just always remember, renovation is not like the product you paid for in a hypermarket, which is mostly produced by some cheap remote labourers from China or Bangladesh. As a Chinese idiom says, "it is too cheap to be good". Price reflects value; please consider the cost at the back to build on your project. You might somehow be lucky to get a really nice cheap deal, but please always be aware of those cheap quotes, you might start to get some "expensive" hidden costs during renovation.
