Would you rather stand out than fit in? Tired of all the plain, conventional rooms everyone seems to have? We list down six interesting living room concepts just for you.
You’ll probably visit hundreds of houses in your life – but despite them having different ‘styles’ (e.g. modern, classic, or country-inspired), you think they still all look the same. They feel generic for you – and there’s nothing wrong with that; each person has their own preference. In your own home, feel free to be in control of what your rooms look like. Add your personal flair to it – express your passions and pursuits!
Here we list down some examples that can serve as inspiration for your new living room!
1. Embracing asymmetry
Most people want to see “order” and balance in their living rooms, so they tend to go for symmetry in everything – tables, doors, and walls cut straight and clean. You can be rebellious by going for asymmetry! Just like in the example pictured above, use unusual shapes to frame your television. You can also go for quirky and oddly-shaped furniture to complement the asymmetry in your living room.
2. The Reader’s Nook
Not one for television? No problem! If you prefer reading books over watching shows, this living room is perfect for you. Instead of having the usual television as the focal point of the living room, you can put a large bookshelf in the center to satisfy your book cravings. You can also allocate a shelf or two to put in some trinkets, photos, or other stuff you find interesting. Some examples include action figures and decorative items that will remind you of your passions and loved ones.
3. The Space Saver
For those with smaller houses, the living room can serve multiple purposes: a commune for the family, an entertainment room, and in this case, even additional storage! In the living room pictured above, they surrounded the television with ‘hidden’ shelves. With this design, limited space would become the least of your worries.
4. Back to Black
Sure, colors can make a room pop out – but too many can be overwhelming. If you’re not into that and prefer dark, neutral colors, the room pictured above can serve as inspiration. Doesn’t it just remind you of Bruce Wayne’s pad? This is perfect for the bachelor (or bachelorette!) who wants to bring in the mysterious and classy vibe to his or her home.
5. Create Your Own Wonder Wall
You should be able to express yourself through your home – and there’s nothing like showing your personality to your friends, family, and other visitors through your living room. One easy way to do this is to post anything that interests you to your wall. In the sample we provided, cartoon images were posted on glass panels. You can even install a chalkboard to your wall if you’re feeling artistic or have kids who are keen on drawing on walls!
6. The Nature Lover
If you’re the outdoorsy type, avoid the ‘caged’ feeling inside your home by incorporating nature into it! Just like in the living room pictured above, let sunlight in through large windows – and grant yourself a spectacular view. Having sunlight would also be beneficial for any indoor plants, which would be a great addition to your living room to achieve an earthy feel. Use wood for your walls and floor, and choose accents of brown to complete the aesthetic.
