Okay, now we are going to talk about interior designers, the one you are going to meet and likely spend a lot of money on after your key collection. (Whoops feels like we are digging a hole for ourselves to jump into....Arghhh.) When interior design firms can be seen on every corner of Singapore nowadays, to meet the right one (I mean designer) becomes more of an effort and very time-consuming.
Well choosing an interior designer is not like grabbing a cereal box from the hypermarket shelf, some homework might be necessary before you meet a designer. Kindly look through their portfolio, if their art direction is similar to what you're looking for, schedule a time to meet up and have a good talk. The "chemistry" between you and your designer could be sensed in this particular first time meeting.
As a Chinese idiom said, "know yourself as well as your enemy" (eh), there are three types of interior designers that you would possibly meet in the future.
1. The dream achiever
This is a designer that will find out what you like and choose the best way to make it happen. He or she is professional enough to make your dream into practical idea by helping you to decide your home theme, functionality and draft out the design drawing before renovation. He fully understands your needs to draft the home structure and plan the furniture layout. He will choose the right material within your budget by not giving up the appearance.
This is the perfect interior designer you would ever have. Apparently they do exist, you just need some time and luck to find them out, and good communication is very much essential.
2. The tools box
This is a designer that finds out what you want just like the first one. When you start to discuss your home renovation, their understanding of your idea and needs make you feel great about finally finding someone who knows your dreams and aspirations. But slowly for some reason or another, you realize they slowly start to put together your vision you have and show you ideas on how it works because basically they are all your ideas, and they are just there as a guide on how-to-do!
When nothing is from the designer, it's easy for them to shift responsibility when something goes wrong during renovation. He probably would say, "See? I told ya!" and forget about he doesn't give you any practical idea at all. This type of designer doesn't really design for you, just your tools box to achieve your goal on home renovation, as you probably doesn't pro enough to do it yourself.
3. The Dictator
A dictator style of interior designer, the one that wants you to only follow his style and design only. Unless you are a "chin chye" (not worry about details) person and really don't have any ideas about home renovation, this type of designer may be your solution.
Just make sure you and your designer at least have some common point of view, and you agree to his design style before engaging his services, otherwise you might end up in a home theme that totally differs from your thoughts.
We understand that you can't tell which type of interior designer you are going to meet when looking for one. Just always keep in mind to communicate your ideas with your interior designer on a constant basis is very important. You are the one that will be living in the house not your designer.
An interior designer is a bridge between your dreams and reality. They see things from a professional perspective and can give you practical solutions. The value of design can be seen on a good designer. The keywords of engaging a good interior designer are time management, communication and good luck!
